Abstract

The conclusions in this report are based on shovel test data and historical research conducted in the Martin Luther King, Jr. and Altama road widening corridors in Brunswick, Georgia in March, 1992. There is only a very low likelihood of finding any historic or prehistoric sites in the project corridor with the exception of Oak Grove Cemetery. Any sites that do exist in the corridor are buried under three to four feet of railroad fill, or have been badly disturbed by railroad drainage ditches. Since the road project will involve repaving existing surfaces and adding fill to median strips, the fill is too deep to allow any impact to buried sites, if they exist. The Oak Grove Cemetery area should be investigated even though any graves in the right-of-way may be too deep to be impacted by the project. Such graves should be looked for during the earliest stages of construction when heavy equipment will be available to find and relocate them.
