Abstract

This report documents the preliminary archaeological survey for cultural resources performed within an area to be impacted by construction of the Hurt Road 115/12 kV substation. This substation is to be constructed on Hicks Road approximately 2.75 miles east-southeast of Smyrna and 2.6 miles north of Mableton. The project area is just north of the current eastern terminus of the East-West Connector. It is bounded on the west by Hicks Road and is roughly rectangular. The survey area is entirely within a section of dissected uplands of the Piedmont physiographic province in north Georgia. Aerial photos indicate that this area has been stable for at least 54 years. The survey area was examined by a pedestrian survey and by the excavation of ten shovel tests. Two-thirds of the area is in pasture, the remainder is wooded or open floodplain adjacent to the unnamed tributary of Nickajack Creek. Other than evidence of recent agricultural activities, no historic or prehistoric cultural materials were recovered, and no archaeological sites were detected within the project area. Given this lack of cultural material, no further work is recommended.
