Technical Report on Archaeological Investigations at the Macedonia African Methodist Church Cemetery in John's Creek, Fulton County, Georgia.

This project was located on the grounds of the reported Macedonia African Methodist Church Cemetery in John's Creek, Fulton County, Georgia (Figure 1). At the request of the Outdoor Advertising Manager, In the GDOT Office of Maintenance, the Archaeological Unit of the Office of Environmental Services accomplished a reconnaissance survey and Investigations to delineate the cemetery grounds with respect to a proposed billboard location.

Georgia Code Title 32, Chapter 6, Article 3 Part 2 - (32-6-75 Restrictions on outdoor advertising authorized by Code Sections 32-6-72 and 32-6-73; multiple message signs on Interstate system, primary highways, and other highways), codified in 2010, states that "(a) No sign authorized by paragraphs (4) through (6) of Code Section 32-6-72 and paragraph (4) of Code Section 32-6-73 shall be erected or maintained which: ...(14) Is within 500 feet In any direction of a public park, public playground, public recreation area, public forest, scenic area, or cemetery; provided, however, that such sign may be located within 500 feet of a public park, public playground, public recreation area, public forest, scenic area, or cemetery when the sign Is separated by buildings or other obstructions so that the sign located within the 500 foot zone is not visible from the public park, public playground, public recreation area, public forest, scenic area, or cemetery: There Is no definition of cemetery In this code section; therefore, cemetery was considered defined pursuant to Georgia Code 36-72-2-Abandoned Cemeteries and Burial Grounds where it Is stated that a cemetery is "any land or structure in this state dedicated to and used for Interment of human remains. It may be either a burial park for earth Interments or a mausoleum for vault or crypt Interments or a combination of one or more thereof." This code section also specifies that the proper delineation of a cemetery is undertaken by a professional archaeologist.
