Archaeological Assessment of Project BRZ-173(1), Lanier County

"In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRZ-173(1), Lanier Co., has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources,

especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.

Plans indicate that the bridge over Ben's Creek on C.R. #103 will be replaced. The approach from the west will begin approximately 900' west of the existing bridge. The corridor will follow the existing road up to 400' west of the bridge, where it will shift north of the existing road and bridge. The proposed corridor will rejoin existing C.R. #103 approximately 550' east of the creek. This new corridor will effectively straighten out the dog-leg curve on the existing eastern approach. Required right-of-way is 80' throughout the length of the project.

The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation

projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above. "
