Abstract

"In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRZLB-035(6) , Butts County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The bridge over Lee Creek on Letcher-Shelnut Rd will be replaced. Plans show the project beginning 1000' west of the creek and following the existing corridor to 250 ' west of the creek. The proposed centerline shifts slightly south of the existing corridor, running just south of the existing bridge and rejoining the existing corridor 450' east of the creek. The project continues along the existing corridor to its terminus, 1000' east of the creek. An 80' corridor was surveyed for the entire project length archaeological survey (Level II ) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Su r vey Guidelines 11 developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefor e, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project confounds to that described above.
