The proposed Ford Plantation Development includes an area of roughly 1800 acres in Bryan County, Georgia, along the banks of the Ogeechee River. The area has been a focus of historic European and Euroamerican settlement since the early 1800s. A moderate level of prehistoric settlement is also know from the area, particularly within the Mississippian period. The project tract encompasses a number of known archaeological sites, identified during a cultural resources survey in the 1980s, and several standing historic structures associated with three different Antebellum Plantations. This project addresses the previously identified archaeological resources (in the form of Phase II Testing at those sites for which it was recommended), and includes Phase I Archaeological Survey of areas not incorporated into the original 1980s undertaking and Phase II Testing of newly identified sites (where it is warranted). The results include recommendations for mitigation at several historic and prehistoric archaeological sites. Recommendations regarding historic structures are included in a separate report.
