Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRF-036-1(52), Dougherty County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Originally, the proposed project was to replace the bridge on SR 62 over Cooleewahee Creek approximately 5 mi east of the city of Pretoria. The project would begin approximately 623ft west of the creek and would end approximately 492ft east of the creek. The existing right-of-way is approximately 100ft. Additional required right-of-way would be approximately 20ft. Also, a construction easement measuring approximately 1116ft by 50ft would be required on the south side of the roadway for the completion of an on-site detour. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor.
