Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) intends to widen a 2.43-mile section of Rock Quarry Road from 0.17 mile (900 ft.) north of Eagles Landing Parkway to US 23/SR 138/SR 42/North Henry Boulevard in Henry County (GDOT PI 0015090). New South Associates, Inc. (New South) conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of this section of the road. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) included all areas of existing and required ROW. As per GDOT's Environmental Procedures Manual (EPM), an Expanded Survey Corridor (ESC) was surveyed 100 feet beyond the APE. The work for this survey was conducted in compliance with Section I 06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (36 CFR 800), and was intended to determine the presence of significant archaeological resources in the project's APE. The survey included background research, archaeological fieldwork, and analysis. The archaeological survey resulted in the identification of two historic sites and one historic isolated find in the APE and ESC. Of these, one site, 9HY545, was not delineated outside of the APE/ESC, but its research potential within the APE/ESC is low. Its eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is unknown. Site 9HY546 is not eligible, and the isolated find does not constitute a significant archaeological resource, thereby making it not eligible for the NRHP. The boundaries of 9HY545 extend an unknown distance outside the ESC. Therefore, it is recommended that the unknown portion of the site be treated as an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) and avoided during construction.
