Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project FRF-002- 2(22), Telfair County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The project begins 1000 feet west of the SCL Railroad on the west side of Helena on U. S. 341. The project follows the existing corridor east for 0.7 miles, with up to 80 feet of right-of-way required in this section. At this point, the corridor shifts north of existing, paralleling the SCL Railroad right-of-way for approximately 1 mi le, rejoining U.S. 341 at this point. Required right-of-way is 50 feet in this section. The balance of the project, approximately 1.1 miles, follows the existing U.S. 341 corridor to a point east of the S. R. 27 Loop. A 150 foot corridor was surveyed in this section. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines… developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodology approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
