A cultural resources survey of 1361 acres of Chattahoochee National Forest in Stephens and Habersham Counties, Georgia, was completed in July, 1993. The surveys were conducted prior to timber sales in portions of Compartments 219,221, 232, 241, 242, and 247 as authorized by, and in compliance with the Antiquities Act of 1906, the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, and numerous additional laws and orders. A total of 15 archeological sites and several artifact occurrences and miscellaneous historic features were recorded. Five of the archeological sites (GA06-493, 496, 501, 517, 520, and 522) are considered to be significant, and potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. It is recommended that these sites be protected by avoidance pending further testing to determine NRHP status. In addition to these sites, avoidance of the remains of three particularity good examples of illegal distilleries (GA06-494, 519, and 523) is recommended. The stills are in buffer zones, and will not affect planned timber sales. One probable grave site(GA06-502) was discovered during the survey. This site is protected by Georgia laws and by Federal policy, and avoidance is recommended. This report presents details of the survey.
