Abstract

This report details the results of Phase II testing at one historical and six prehistoric archaeological sites situated in the proposed Rocky Mountain to Pinson 500kV transmission line corridor. The sites are designated 9FL272, 9FL273, 9FL274, 9FL276, 9FL283, 9FL285, and 9FL286. Prehistoric sites 9FL272, 9FL273, 9FL276, 9FL283, 9FL285, and 9FL286 include lithic scatters, special activity occupations, and/or campsites. Sites with diagnostic evidence indicate that they date to the transitional Late Archaic/Early Woodland (ca.1,500-300 B.C.) and/or Late Woodland (ca.A.D. 500-1000) periods. The historical site, 9F1274, was occupied beginning about A.D. 1900. It appears to have been abandoned in the early 1930s and reoccupied for a brief period in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Based on the results of Phase II investigations, Garrow & Associates, Inc. recommends that none of the sites have the potential to meet any of the four criteria necessary for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No further work is recommended at these locations.
