Abstract

An archaeological survey and evaluation of the proposed widening and improvements for SR 4/US 1, in Toombs and Emanuel Counties, Georgia was performed in November 1993. The proposed widening corridor and improvements encompassed portions of both the east and west sides of SR 4/US 1. The survey corridor begins at the northern City Limits of Lyons and extends north to the intersection of SR 4/US 1 and Interstate 16. Project goals included (1) location and evaluation of all archaeological resources which might be impacted by proposed construction activities and (2) development of management recommendations. Historical and archaeological research consisted of examination of relevant archival resources and field survey. Field survey involved pedestrian coverage of the entire 13.2 mile project corridor. Screened shovel testing and visual inspection of exposed ground surfaces were used to locate and evaluate archaeological resources. Four archaeological sites and nine isolated finds were encountered during the survey. All four sites and nine isolated finds are twentieth century artifact scatters and are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Based on the findings of this cultural resource survey, it is recommended that the proposed impact corridor be given archaeological clearance to proceed.
