Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, STP-030-1(23), Webster/Sumter Counties has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project consists of the leveling and resurfacing of SR 27 in Webster and Sumter Counties. The project would begin approximately 324 m (1063.0ft) west of the city of Preston (MP 5.6) in Webster County and would end approximately 689 m (2260.6ft) east of North Bond Street (MP 3.35) in Sumter County. Also included in the proposed project would be the construction of 0.60 m (2ft) shoulders along the length of the project. The existing right-of-way varies from approximately 18.3 (60ft) to 30.5 m (100ft). No additional right-of-way would be required for the completion of the proposed project. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor.
