Abstract

Two archeological sites, 9FL200 and 9FL201, were evaluated by excavating shovel tests and test pits, and both are recommended as eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The sites are located near Plant Hammond on the Coosa River west of Rome, Georgia. Both are multicomponent prehistoric village sites that were demonstrated to contain abundant artifacts and preserved features, including a probable human burial on 9FL200. Both sites are located relatively close to Indian mounds. Transmission line construction may impact the sites, particularly where power poles are erected. Avoidance is recommended, although this may not be feasible. Archeological data recovery is the recommended alternative in construction areas if avoidance is not possible. Concerning the probable human burial located on 9FL200,Georgia Power Company has taken steps to protect this area from all forms of ground disturbing activities.
