Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project F-017-3(42), Chattooga County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. Present plans indicate that U.S. 27 will be widened from the intersection with First St. in Summerville northeasterly to the intersection with Old US 27 in Trion, Ga. From First St. to Cleghora Rd., existing right-of-way is 60 feet in width and the remaining portion of the project to the north has a right-of-way of 80 feet. For the most part, the amount of required right-of-way is 80 feet. Additional right-of-way would be necessary at intersecting roads for the purpose of improving turning radiuses and at several locations for upgrading crossroad drainage. Construction easements would occur in varying amounts (up to 30ft.) throughout the length of the project for the reconstruction of drive entrances, slopes and cross-road drainage. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
