Archaeological Reassessment of Project NH-012-1(83), Floyd County, HP 950214-053

Abstract

In compliance with Section I 06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of I 966 and amendments thereto, Project NH-012-1 (83), Floyd County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

Project NH-012-1 (83) in Floyd County would widen and reconstruct SR 20/SR 100 from two lanes to four lanes between the intersection of SR 20 and SR I 00/Holland Rd. and the intersection of SR 20 and SR I 00/Foster Mill Rd., for a total project length of 5.24 km (3.26 mi.). Brockington and Associates originally surveyed the project corridor in 1995 and found no NRHP eligible archaeological resources. The results were presented in the 1995 cultural resource survey report entitled, "Cultural Resources Survey and Evaluation of the SR 20/SR I 00 Highway Widening Corridor, Floyd County, Georgia". Since that survey, GDOT has changed the project design to include the acquisition of additional required right-of-way varying from 5 m. (16.4 ft.) to 155 m. (508.5 ft.) along the proposed project corridor. GDOT archaeologists conducted an intensive survey consistent with the additional proposed right-of-way of this project not included in the Brockington and Associates 1995 survey.

An archaeological survey (Level Il) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
