Abstract

This report documents the literature and records search and intensive archaeological survey conducted on the proposed ETNG/SONAT Interconnect Project for East Tennessee Natural Gas Company (ETNG). With the exception of approximately 700 feet at the north end in Hamilton County, Tennessee, the approximately eight miles of the proposed pipeline are in Catoosa County, Georgia. Five prehistoric sites, one historic site, and 11 isolated artifact finds were documented during the Phase I survey; one of these sites was previously identified by a Garrow & Associates, Inc. investigation for Atlanta Gas Light Company during a survey for a parallel pipeline. Intact deposits were identified at two sites, both located near Tiger Creek. Neither site produced temporal diagnostics and contained only lithics, not ceramics. One historic structure dating to the 1930s was identified. During the fieldwork, all prehistoric and historic sites potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places were successfully avoided by rerouting the pipeline corridor.
