Abstract

Between November 9 and December 4, 2017, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I addendum archaeological survey for the proposed interchange reconstruction at Interstate (I-)85 and State Road (SR) 18, in Troup County, Georgia (Georgia Department of Transportation [GDOT] (P.I. No. 0009975, HP No. 140723-005). The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological resources within the area of potential effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking so that potential effects to identified cultural resources could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

The project is located in West Point, in Troup County, Georgia, and consists of replacing the existing interchange of I-85 at SR 18 with roundabouts and a third roundabout at the intersection of SR 18 at SR 103 as well as pedestrian and bicycle improvements. There are also two bridges on SR 18, located west of the I-85 interchange, over Long Cane Creek that are within the project area.

Two previously archaeological sites, both remnants of historic homes, were revisited but found to have been severely disturbed by recent development. Each was previously recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion D. Below are a report summary table and keywords for this project.
