An archaeological assessment survey was conducted by Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) of a segment of U.S. 27 through Troup, Heard, and Carroll Counties, Georgia, between December 1993 and February 1994. By expanding the right of way, the existing roadway is scheduled to be widened an additional 100 feet (30 meters). The cultural resource assessment included a pedestrian survey over the entire length of the corridor combined with systematic shovel testing at 30 meter intervals. A total of 814 shovel tests was excavated within the approximately 28.1 mile section of U.S. 27. Fieldwork resulted in the recording of 16 archaeological sites and 3 isolated artifact occurrences within the 100 foot wide expansion corridor, but none is considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places as archaeological sites. In addition, six cultural resources, two of which are potentially significant, were recorded immediately adjacent to the proposed expansion corridor. Site 9HE161 is a prehistoric midden with a Swift Creek component along the north bank of Potato Creek, and 9HE162 is a mid19th/early-2Oth century cemetery. Additional investigations at these two cultural resources is recommended in the event that the design and location of the expansion corridor change to adversely impact either cultural resource.
