Abstract

This report details the results of Phase II, Task 3 of the Research and Recovery Program for Historic Resources at the Rocky Mountain Pumped Storage Project, Floyd County, Georgia. Documentary sources, including tax digests, census schedules (population, agricultural, and slave), deed records, church and school records, personal communications, and court records formed the material for this study. In order to achieve more depth of analysis, the period of study was limited to the years from 1845 to 1885, with major emphasis on the three decades preceding, encompassing, and following the Civil War. The framing methodology and research questions were derived from local history, settlement studies, and the concepts of human enterprise and social economy. The results are presented as characterizations of agricultural enterprises, of nonagricultural enterprises, and of the elite of Texas Valley with special attention to the changes in each of these over time. Each characterization is determined by documentary evidence and supported by categorical, descriptive, synthetic, and statistical analysis of all available data. A summary section provides a synopsis of the cultural state of Texas Valley in each of the three decades of the study period.
