Abstract

The present report summarizes a cultural resource survey of 211 acres of land upon which timber has been sold. Of the 211 acres, 84 acres have been thinned of timber; ·the balance will be clear cut. The project area, comprised off our timber sale units located in Walker County (formerly Cherokee County) is approximately 1.25 miles north of the Walker-Chattooga County line on the West Armuchee Valley Road. Access is from the West Armuchee Valley Road. The project area, part of the Armuchee Creek Watershed, is characterized by moderately to steeply rolling terrain. The soil associations appear to be Gilpin-DeKalb-Bodine-Steekee, with moderately deep soils on the mountains. Approximately 50 percent of the soils on the project area are brown, stony, and very cherty. A commercial chert quarry was encountered adjacent to the sale area. Dominant trees are pine, although oak, poplar, ash, gum and maple occur throughout the compartment. A recent prescribed burn reduced the understory, allowing excellent ground visibility.
