Abstract

On June 20, 1991, Charles Norris contacted this office regarding a request from Mr. Allen Thomas, Laurens County Clerk of Court, that a GDOT archaeologist investigate an area within the rights-of-way for the above project believed to be a possible location of the grave of Fredric Roberts.

On June 21, 1991, our archaeologist, Bob Entorf, met with Roy Hardy and Neal Brown of the Dublin Resident Engineers Office, John McCarty of your office and Mr. Thomas of Dublin to visit the possible grave location. The area in question, as delineated by Mr. Thomas, is that area located within the rights-of-way east of Franklin Street extending easterly to the west wall of a concrete block railroad building: a distance of approximately 200 feet.

Between June 21 and June 25, the area in question was excavated to sterile subsoil. No evidence of human burial(s) was identified. In addition, the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for Dublin dating from 1895 to 1930 were checked for cemetery notations in the project vicinity. No cemeteries were indicated on these maps within the project area. Based on the field investigations and background research it is concluded that GDOT Project MLP-822 (1) would not disturbed burial(s) within the area investigated.
