Archeological Survey of Proposed Greenspace on the McElhhannon/Harroway Property Along Rocky Creek, Barrow County

Abstract

On December 11, 2003, Joel Jones and Tom Gresham conducted an archeological survey of a strip of ground stretching some 2600 feet on the north side of Rocky Creek, searching for archeological sites located within 100 feet of the creek bank. The survey was required by the Barrow County Planning Department. A letter to you from M. Patricia Chapman, Director of Planning at the Barrow County Planning Department, instructed that as a "condition of approval placed on the R-1 zoning on the McElhannon/Harroway property on Mulberry Road, an archeological survey of the stream corridor is required prior to the initiation of land disturbance activities. The area to be surveyed is the stream corridor along its entire length abutting the property and from the center of the stream bed to a line 100 feet from the top of the bank. The survey is not intended to be an exhaustive, detailed examination of the property but an overview evaluation as to the presence of Native American or other historically significant places or artifacts." We were contacted by your company in November of 2003 requesting a bid for the archeological survey. Tom Gresham received a letter from W.T. Dunahoo and Associates dated December 8, 2003, instructing us to proceed with the archeological survey.
