Abstract

Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI), archaeologically surveyed approximately 447.6 hectares (1106 acres) in response to a Scope of Work for a Cultural Resources Survey of Selected Impact areas in the Townsend Bombing Range, McIntosh County, Georgia. The Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Office (NREAO), Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS), Beaufort, South Carolina, required a cultural resources survey of selected tracts within the 5,183 acres of the range. This survey was designed to locate and assess the significance of cultural resources within the project area by means of an intensive cultural resources survey in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, Executive Order 11593 (Protection and Enhancement of the Cultural Environment), and the Archaeological and Historical Preservation Act of 1974, as described in the project Scope of Work.). Fieldwork took place between the 9th and 17th of November, 1995, for a total of 9 working days with a crew of eleven. The scope of work called for an intensive pedestrian survey augmented by the excavation of shovel tests in order to locate and assess all cultural resources. A total of 2,748 shovel tests were recorded during the course of the survey, three of which were positive, while the remainder either yielded negative results or could not be excavated due to standing water, prior disturbances, or because they were in a drained swamp. A total volume of approximately 67.0077 cubic meters was excavated by shovel tests during the survey. The survey produced a total of three isolated finds. All were prehistoric in nature, and only one artifact was recovered from each location. All isolated finds found during the survey were tested to delineate the horizontal and vertical limits of the site and the integrity of the deposits. All isolated finds were deemed to be ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, following criteria designated in 36CFR60.4, 'Determination of Evaluation of NRHP Eligibility for Inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places" (US Department of the Interior 1991). The isolated finds warrant no further consideration regarding the presence of cultural resources at their respective locations.
