Abstract

On October 7-8, 2015, Brockington and Associates, Inc. completed a background literature review and field investigations for a Phase I archaeological survey for the proposed Amlajack electrical substation southwest of Walt Sanders Road in Newnan, Georgia (Figures 1-4). This letter report summarizes the archaeological resources survey study methods, results, and recommendations related to the investigation of the project area.

The property is approximately 16. 93 acres comprised of mixed juvenile hardwoods with dense underbrush adjacent areas of planted pine and agricultural fields. Several utility corridors, including the Dyer Road-South Coweta 115 kV and the Newnan Primary 004642-C. W. Matthews 46 kV transmission lines are located within the project area. The entire 16.93-acre property was considered within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) for the investigation. The archaeological investigations consisted of an examination of archaeological site forms from previous surveys along with a shovel testing survey and surface inspection with the APE.

The project was carried out as part of the Programmatic Agreement in place between Georgia Transmission Corporation (GTC) and the Georgia State Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division (HPD). Though technically due diligence, all activities described herein have been carried out in accordance with the stipulations of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act HPA) (per 36 CFR Part 800, as amended through 2004) and by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61.
