Abstract

This project proposes to replace the existing bridge (Structure ID 129-0028-2) on State Route (SR) 61 /United States Highway (US) 411 over the Chessie Seaboard Consolidated Railroad (CSX) (#350284W), located 2.4 kilometers (km) (1.5 miles [mi]) north of the unincorporated community of Oakman in Gordon County, Georgia. The existing bridge, which was constructed in 1974, is 56 meters (m) (184 feet [ft]) long and consists of two 3.7 m (12 ft) lanes (one in each direction) and 3 m (10 ft) shoulders. The existing roadway has two 3.7 m (12 ft) lanes (one in each direction) and 3 m (10 ft) shoulders (partially paved). The existing right-of-way (ROW) width is 45.7 m (150 ft).

The use of an off-site detour at this location is likely not feasible due to the 45 km (28 mi) trip increase traveling along State Routes. Local routes in the project vicinity are not suitable detour routes. as this would result in significant left turn movements at an uncontrolled intersection, as well as increased traffic through an at-grade railroad crossing. Therefore, the proposed bridge will be constructed on a permanent offset alignment to either the east or west of the existing alignment. The proposed bridge will have two 3.7 m (12 ff) lanes (one in each direction) and 3 m (10 ft) shoulders (1.98 m (6.5 ft] paved).
