Abstract

On October 25, 1956, the writer proceeded to Tugalo, Georgia to conduct archeological salvage operations in the Hartwell Reservoir area. The first site selected for examination was the Lower Cherokee town of Tugalo for which there are a number of historical references dating back to about 1715. The village area of this site had previously been explored by the University of Georgia and the Tsali Institute, under the direction of William Edwards, but the mound had not been touched. Accordingly, we began operations in the mound on Monday, October 29, using a crew of two men which has since been increased to four. The mound has been cultivated for some years by the present owner; Augustus Turnbull.
