Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archeological Survey of the Rome SE Bypass on June 11 and 15, 1992. The proposed corridor is new alignment, and extends from S. R. 101 to U. S. 411. The corridor is 3.5 miles in length with a minimum 250 foot wide right-of-way. A pedestrian survey designed to identify archeological sites was conducted. Two sites, one prehistoric and one with evidence of a prehistoric and historic occupation as well as a very recent occupation, were found. A prehistoric isolated artifact was also located. The Georgia State site files indicate no previously recorded sites within the corridor and only one site (9Fl34) within a mile of the corridor. Neither site found by this survey is recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. No further archeological study is recommended.
