Abstract

Southern Research conducted a five mile survey of a proposed bypass corridor around McRae, Georgia in Telfair County and a small portion of western Wheeler County for the Georgia Department of Transportation. Six sites and three occurrences were identified from the survey, which were all in Telfair County. One site, 9Tfl63--a historic site, was recommended for testing. The site consisted of a collapsed barn and a standing barn and the pier foundations of a house; a brick-lined well and other above ground features were evident on the site. The site had been bulldozed and the house piers were not intact. A total of 49 shovel tests were excavated across the site and four test pits (2 measured 2x2 m and 2 were 1x2 m) were excavated. Archival records and an informant interview indicated the house at 9Tf3 was removed in 1969. Artifacts from the excavations suggested that the house was probably built around the turn of the twentieth century. 9Tf63 was not recommended as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). There were no sites eligible for the NRHP found during the survey.
