Abstract

In January 1997 an archaeological survey of the Roxboro Road widening project in Fulton County, Georgia was conducted by Brockington and Associates, Inc. for Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. The purpose of this investigation was to locate any archaeological resources which might be impacted by the proposed project, to determine their significance with regard to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria, and to determine the effect the proposed road improvements may have on these resources. This archaeological investigation was conducted in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (as amended, 1 992). The project corridor encompasses .75 km ( 0.47 mile). The proposed project begins at the intersection of Roxboro Road and Pritchard Way, extends south along Roxboro Road, and ends at the westernmost intersection of Roxboro Road and Rockhaven Circle. Proposed right-of way in the project corridor is 29.0 m (95.1 feet) wide. Improvements will consist of widening Roxboro Road from two to four 3.3 m (10.8 feet) travel lanes with a 6.1 m (20 feet) raised grass median, 1.3 m (4.3 feet) bicycle lane, 1.5 m (4.9 feet) sidewalk, and curbs and gutters. No previously identified archaeological sites exist within the project corridor. No archaeological sites or isolated finds were identified within the project Area of Potential Effect as a result of this field investigation. Based on the findings of this survey, no additional archaeological investigations are recommended for the Roxboro Road widening project.
