Abstract

In February 1997 Brockington and Associates conducted a cultural resources survey of the proposed Old Villa Rica Road bridge replacement in Cobb County, Georgia. The project area consists of a 12.2 meter (40 feet) wide corridor located approximately 30 meters (100 feet) west of the existing road. The intensive survey consisted of historical background research and architectural and archaeological field work. Background research was conducted at the Georgia State Archives in Atlanta, the Department of Natural Resources (Historic Preservation Division) in Atlanta, and the Georgia State Archaeological Site Files in Athens. Examination of historic maps at the Georgia State Archives did not identify any historic resources in the project corridor. Research conducted at the Historic Preservation Division did not locate any previously recorded National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligible historic properties in the project vicinity. Research conducted at the Georgia State Archaeological Site Files did not identify any previously recorded archaeological sites within the project corridor; however, there are four previously recorded archaeological sites in the vicinity (within 2 miles). These four sites are recorded as small prehistoric lithic scatters recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Archaeological field survey consisted of shovel test excavation every 30 meters (100 feet) in parallel transects. Much of the project corridor is swampy and/or disturbed by previous road construction/maintenance or drainage ditches and has a low potential for archaeological deposits. The field survey did not identify any archaeological sites. Architectural survey did not identify any historic structures in the project area. Neither historic background research nor field survey identified any cultural resources in the project tract. Most of the project tract is either swampy or disturbed and has a low potential for archaeological sites. Since no archaeological sites or historic properties were located in the project area, no further work is recommended at this location.
