Abstract

Southern Research tested 9Sw137 located at Florence Marina State Park on Lake Walter F. George. The Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division of the Department of Natural Resources operates the Marina and proposes to construct five new cabins. Site 9Sw137, a prehistoric and historic artifact scatter, was originally recorded in 1990. Two probable tenant houses stood in the area during the early to mid-twentieth century, but were razed sometime between the 1940s and 1950s. Two 1 x 2 m test pits were excavated, which contained historic period artifacts along with a few prehistoric and Creek Indian artifacts; no features were found. 9Sw137 was not recommended as eligible to the National Register of Historic Places because of extensive disturbance that probably occurred when the houses were razed. Since a few Creek artifacts were identified and a known Creek settlement, Sawokliutchi, was located south of Florence on the Chattahoochee River, it was suggested that during grading, a representative from the Office of the State Archaeologist be present to monitor the area for possible features such as burial pits.
