Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., of Athens, Georgia, conducted a reconnaissance level cultural resources survey of 807 ha (1993 ac) of Oconee National Forest, Georgia, for the U.S. Forest Service. We surveyed areas of Greene, Jasper, Jones, and Putnam Counties and found forty-three new archeological sites and two artifact occurrences. Three sites with no information other than their Forest Service numbers were relocated and treated as new sites, including the completion of State Site Forms, photographs, and other documentation. Official State Site numbers were assigned to these three sites. A total of 20 prehistoric lithic scatters, 24 prehistoric artifact scatters, 12 historic house sites (one with a lithic component as well), four sites with rock piles of unknown age, and two prehistoric artifact occurrences were recorded. Fifteen sites are potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Protection is recommended for these sites until their eligibility can be determined by further testing. Forty-one sites are recommended ineligible for the Register. Extensive disturbance, often coupled with low artifact density, severely limits their research potential. No further work is recommended for these sites.
