Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of a 450 m long portion of a proposed waste water pipeline and a 30 x 30 m tract that will house a lift station. Three shovel tests at the lift station tract showed it to be a low lying area, heavily disturbed by filling and grading, and containing no sites. Seven shovel tests in the floodplain portion of the proposed waste water pipeline located no sites, but revealed recent, historic period alluvium to depths of over 1.0 in. Testing in similar floodplain locations has revealed historic alluvium to depths of over 2 in. The pipeline will be buried less than 1 in deep so deeper testing with heavy equipment was deemed unnecessary. One multicomponent prehistoric and historic site, M93, was discovered within the pipeline corridor at the edge of the uplands. The site has been heavily disturbed by plowing, erosion, and borrow pit excavation. We recommend 9Ht93 not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places because of loss of integrity and lack of additional research potential. In regard to cultural resources, it is the opinion of the principal investigator that the project be given clearance to proceed.
