Abstract

Archaeological sites 9BK65, 9BK66 and 9BK67 were recorded by Georgia Society of Archaeology member Gary Doster in 1987. Mr. Doster and the owner of the property, Dr. Forest Kellogg made small collections from the sites and donated those collections to the University of Georgia. At the request of Dr. Kellogg, a brief reconnaissance of two of the sites, 9BK65 and 9BK66, was conducted by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., on October 14, 1987 (Ledbetter n.d.). Small collections were also made from the two sites during the reconnaissance survey. These collections were incorporated into Mr. Doster's collections and are presently curated in the University of Georgia, Department of Anthropology's site collections. The SAS survey was a non-compliance investigation requested by Dr. Kellogg. There was no attempt made to determine site size, the range of components present on the sites, or the depth of cultural deposits. Like other sites in the immediate area, these sites had been severely vandalized by relic collectors. Much of the material collected from the sites was recovered from vandals back dirt piles and thus represent biased or non-representative collections. It is more probable that the ceramic collections are more representative of the site occupations. The following brief report represents a tabulation of cultural remains recovered by nonsystematic survey techniques. The value of this presentation lies in the recognition of intensive Woodland presence which has not been adequately defined for the Burke County area of the Brier Creek drainage (Brockington 1971).
