Abstract

From 14 to 16 February 2001, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed improvement corridor of Dietz Road, Catoosa County, Georgia. This survey was conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) under a subcontract with Greenhorne and O'Mara, Inc., to determine if any significant archaeological resources are present in the project's area of potential effect (APE). The project corridor is 3.7 km (2.3 mi) long and the APE is defined as 15 meters from the edge of the pavement on either side of the road. Background research was conducted at the Georgia Archaeological Site Files in Athens, Georgia. No previously recorded archaeological sites exist within the project corridor. However, based on our analysis of Civil War-era maps, a road was present in the project corridor by 1863. Dietz Road appears to generally follow the alignment of the original road although none of the original road bed is present. The entire corridor has been disturbed by residential and commercial development. Additionally, a portion of the right-of-way has been scraped in preparation for construction in two areas of the corridor. Archaeological survey recorded no archaeological sites within the project corridor. We recommend no further archaeological resources considerations at this time.
