Abstract

On 15 December 2000, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an archaeological resources survey for proposed improvements along Whittlesey Road in Columbus, Georgia. The project corridor, which extends from Whitesville Road east to Veteran's Parkway, is approximately 1.28 km (0.8 mi). The archaeological area of potential effect (APE) is approximately 23 meters (75 ft)wide, or 11.5 meters (37.5 ft) on either side of the existing centerline. This survey was conducted in compliance with Sections 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (16 USC 470, as amended through 1992) and regulations implementing this law (36 CFR Part 800). Archaeological investigations consisted of background research and field survey. Background research was conducted at the State Archaeological Site Files, Athens, Georgia, and at the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Atlanta. No previously recorded archaeological resources were identified within 0.8 km (0.5 mile) of the proposed project corridor. Field survey identified no archaeological resources within the project APE. No significant archaeological resources will be affected by the proposed road improvements and we recommend archaeological resources clearance for the project.
