Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) was requested to conduct a reconnaissance survey of approximately 220 acres of partially developed land known as the Brezina Tract. The survey area is located on the northern side of Sandy Creek in southern Greene County. The survey was conducted as a part of the due diligence process prior to purchase by Reynolds. The survey was conducted on August 9, 2001. The survey consisted of surface inspection of all high probability areas with respect to archeological sites. Land forms with the highest potential for containing sites generally exhibited excellent surface exposure because of grading related to the prior landscaping and logging activities. The survey identified eight archeological sites which generally consisted of sparse scatters of prehistoric and historic artifacts. No preserved historic structure foundations or cemeteries were encountered. Because the survey was not conducted at an intensive level, no determination of eligibility is recommended for any of the sites. However, all sites are highly disturbed. The reconnaissance suggests the potential for encountering large or significant archeological sites on the tract appears is minimal. An intensive archeological survey is recommended as a means of adequately assessing the cultural resources on the tract.
