Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the Jennings Mill Parkway Extension project in Oconee County, Georgia. The proposed corridor is approximately 2.5 miles in length and includes about 100 feet of right-of-way. The survey was completed during the week of April 15, 2002. Most of the study corridor is new alignment including: about 4500 feet west-northwest between Epps Bridge Road and the Paul Broun Parkway (US 78/SR 10) for the Jennings Mill Parkway Extension, roughly 2000 feet northwest between the Jennings Mill Parkway Extension corridor and Jennings Mill Road as a US 78/SR 10 Frontage Road, and another 2000 feet of new corridor for the realignment of Jennings Mill Road on the other side of US 78/SR 10. The remainder of the proposed Jennings Mill Parkway Extension corridor is along existing right-of-way from Virgil Langford Road to SR 316 (approximately 2000 feet). The survey located and recorded two archaeological sites, one historic and prehistoric artifact scatter on the surface of an eroded and graded road and the other a very light prehistoric lithic scatter in the plowzone of an abandoned agricultural field. Both of these finds are recommended ineligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and no further archaeological study of the proposed Jennings Mill Parkway Extension corridor is recommended.
