Abstract

On 1 October 2002, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an archaeological resources survey of four proposed intersection improvements located in Macon County, Georgia. The four areas of potential effect (APE) included in this investigation are located at the intersections of State Route (SR) 26 and SR 49, SR 26 and SR 224, SR 90 and SR 128, and SR 128 and SR 127. This survey was conducted for The LPA Group, Inc. under contract with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and in compliance with all relevant cultural resources legislation (National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, 36CFR 800). Background research conducted at the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and through the Georgia State Archaeological Site Files identified no previously recorded archaeological sites within 0.8 km (0.5 mile) of the APE. Likewise, field survey identified no archaeological sites within the APE; however, three isolated finds of cultural material were discovered within the proposed right of way for improvements at the intersection of SR 90 and SR 128. These isolates, two prehistoric and one historic, were recorded, but are not recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The proposed intersection improvements will not affect significant archaeological resources and the project is recommended for archaeological resource clearance.
