Abstract

On April 3, 2003, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., completed an archeological survey of 26 intersection improvement projects in Floyd County, Georgia. One of the intersections is located northeast of Rome on SR 53 (Figure 1), and another is located southwest in Cave Springs (Figure 2). The remaining intersections are located in or near downtown Rome (Figures 3 and 4). All of the intersection improvement projects are located in heavily developed portions of the county. The proposed improvements are relatively minor, consisting of the replacement of existing traffic lights and signal poles with new ones, installing new controller cabinets, adding pedestrian ramps, and installing fiber optic control cables. Based on the descriptions of the projects, it appears that the only ground disturbing activity will consist of replacing existing signal poles with new ones. As described in the design concepts, the new poles will be placed near existing poles, which means that they will be positioned within existing, graded right-of-way. The survey included archival research and afield inspection of each intersection. Representative photographs are presented in the report, following the more detailed descriptions of the intersection improvements. One copy of the final report will be curated at the Antonio J. Waring, Jr. Archaeological Laboratory, State University of West Georgia, Carrollton, Georgia. Copies of all project specific field notes, field maps, and other related photographs will be permanently archived at the Georgia Department of Transportation Office of Environment/Location.
