Abstract

The project corridor runs for 2,650 linear feet [(ft) 808.3 m] along both sides of Waleska Street, extending south from the S.R. 5 intersection to the intersection/merger of West Main Street and North Street in downtown Canton (Figures I and 2). The proposed undertaking will consist of improved sidewalks, lighting, handicap ramps, and crosswalks within the existing right-of-way. Pedestrian improvements will consist primarily of five feet wide sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, crosswalks, and necessary signage. Within the project corridor the existing travel lanes would be reduced from 12 ft (3.7 m) to eleven ft (3.4 m). The new sidewalks, which will be five feet wide, will be installed at the back of new 2 ft (0.6 m) curbs and gutters. The road will be realigned at the south end of the project area, where Waleska Street enters the downtown business district. A courtyard will be installed at this intersection. Pedestrian street lighting will be installed along the street and on the Etowah River bridge.
