Abstract

This addendum to the cultural resource survey report entitled Cultural Resource Survey Report, Klondike Road Widening Project, Rockdale County, Georgia (Cleveland et al. 1996) was prepared in response to the additional intersection improvement plans to be undertaken at the western end of the original Klondike Road widening project corridor. The additional work involves the widening of Smyrna Road from two lanes to four lanes for approximately 345 m (1,132 feet) to the north and approximately 338 m (1,109 feet) south of its intersection with Klondike Road, the widening of Klondike Road for approximately 125 m (410 feet) west of its intersection with Smyrna Road to add a southbound turn lane, and the widening of Klondike Road for approximately 115 m (377 feet) east of its intersection with Smyrna Road to add an additional southbound turn lane. The architectural and archaeological surveys were performed in January 1997 by Garrow & Associates, Inc. A pedestrian survey of the project's Area of Potential Effects (APE) was undertaken to locate architectural resources. The APE for the architectural survey was defined as an area encompassing the project corridor and those resources adjacent to the project corridor that would have a physical or visual connection to the proposed road widening. A combined pedestrian survey and subsurface testing program was pursued throughout the project corridor to identify archaeological resources. No properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) are located in the APE. Two resources previously identified by Garrow & Associates, HS-3 and RO-5, are located in the APE. One archaeological site also identified by Garrow & Associates, 9RO126, is located in the project corridor. The literature search conducted prior to the original Klondike Road widening project indicated that no historically significant individuals or events were associated with either the original Klondike Road widening project area or the project corridor presented in this addendum. Site 9RO126 is located near the northeast corner of the intersection of Klondike and Smyrna roads and is recommended ineligible for the NRHP. HS-3 is located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Klondike and Smyrna roads and is also recommended ineligible for the ITRHP. RO-5 is located on the east side of Smyrna Road, south of the intersection of Klondike and Smyrna roads, and was previously determined eligible for the NRHP by the Georgia Historic Preservation Division.
