Abstract

SSI conducted a cultural resource survey of the additional area to be impacted by the proposed Rocky Mountain Pumped Storage Facility, Floyd County, Georgia, at the request of the Georgia Power Company. The survey was conducted between September 24 and October 19, 1979. Twenty one historical and archaeological sites were recorded, including fourteen prehistoric sites, six historic domestic sites, one prehistoric/historic site, and one historic liquor still. Five historic sites and one prehistoric site were recommended for additional investigation. Site 9, a large prehistoric multi-component Archaic to Woodland site, is determined to be significant in that some surficial integrity may exist. The site is located in the project buffer zone and avoidance and preservation are recommended. Site 16, an historic mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century plantation/farm complex with 13 standing structures, is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places and further investigation, including limited architectural documentation, is recommended. Historic Sites 6, 10, 13, and 19 were afforded additional study, including an oral history, chain of title search, and test excavation, which were conducted between November 15 through November 23, 1979. Sites 10 and 19, Depression Era domestic dwellings, and Site 13, a 1940 period liquor still, were determined to lack further research potential and nomination to the National Register of Historic Places is not recommended. Site 6, a mid-nineteenth century domestic dwelling. was determined to be of further research value and eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. 'Since this site also is within the project buffer zone, avoidance and preservation are recommended.
