Abstract

The Real Estate Unit of the Department of Natural Resources requested information about archaeological resources within a ca. 4 acre area near Eason's Bluff, in Appling County. Improvements to an existing river access point are proposed. One archaeological site (9AP 17) has been recorded in the immediate area, possibly within the tract in question. According to the Georgia Archaeological Site File database, the site is a prehistoric site with Late Archaic and Late Mississippian components. The site was recorded in a 1977 survey, as were several other sites along the river. The survey stated that only the surface portion of the site was known, and that the site had been disturbed. National Register evaluation was not made. I suspect that this site was recorded during a thesis-related survey of roads and other exposed surfaces along the river that took place around that time. Given the small size of the subject property, this may be the only site present in that area. Additional investigation, including sub-surface testing, would be required to assess the site's eligibility for inclusion in the National Register. If the site is actually located within the subject tract, State ownership would provide additional protection.
