Abstract

From 15 to 19 August 2005, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted Phase II archaeological testing of site 9DU154 in Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia. This investigation was conducted under contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District (USACE). Site 9DU154 is a lithic scatter initially recorded in January 2005 during cultural resources survey of two proposed levee alignments in the City of Albany (Powis and Kane 2005). Two separate corridors (Corridors A and B) are being considered for levee construction. Site 9DU154 is located within the shared Area of Potential Effect (APE) of Corridors A and B, but is being evaluated for use of Corridor B. The site was recommended potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion D, because of the potential for intact archaeological contexts, such as culturally or temporally diagnostic artifacts and/or features (Powis and Kane 2005). Phase II testing was conducted to provide a definitive NRHP recommendation. Considering the frequency of lithic scatters in Dougherty County, and the lack of diagnostic artifacts and subsurface cultural features at 9DU154, it is unlikely that 9DU154 could add new or significant information to the archaeological record. Therefore, 9DU154 is recommended not eligible for the NRHP. Cultural resources clearance is recommended.
