Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase II archaeological study of a portion of 9FO247 for Moreland Altobelli Associates, Inc. during October and November of 2005. The study focused on investigating stratigraphic integrity of cultural deposits within the proposed area of impact of SR 20 where it crosses the Chattahoochee River to the northwest. Investigations included shovel test excavations within a 10 x 10-meter grid and unit excavations of one 1 x 2-meter and one 2 x 2meter block on either side of the existing SR 20 bridge. Significant disturbance of Middle and Late Woodland cultural deposits at this location was evidenced, but other areas of the site (not within the present project area) may yield intact cultural deposits with further research potential. Accordingly, New South Associates recommends that the portion of 9FO247 proposed for modification is not eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and that clearance should be provided to proceed with planned activities within the proposed area of impact.
