Abstract

Archeological Survey of Project BRZLB-239(3), Quitman County. The proposed project would replace two narrow and structurally deficient bridges, both built in 1958, on CR 84/Union Church Road over Pataula Creek Overflow and Pataula Creek located approximately 2.5 miles north of Morris, Georgia. The existing 210' by 24' and 180' by 24' concrete bridges would be replaced with 240' by 28' reinforced concrete bridges on existing alignment. The project would be closed during construction and there would be an offsite detour provided by Quitman County. Existing right-of-way is 80 feet. Proposed right-of-way would be a maximum of 160 feet. Existing travel lanes are 10' with 5' rural shoulders. The proposed typical section would consist of two 10' travel lanes, 2' paved shoulders and 5' rural shoulders. The total length of the project would be 2100' or 0.398 mile. An archeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. In addition to the land surveyed by GDOT archaeologists a section of right-of-way that belongs to the U.S. Corps of Engineers has already been cleared by the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office. Please the attachment for more information on this clearance. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
