Abstract

A Phase I Intensive Archaeological Resources Survey, and Phase II Testing was carried out for the proposed Armuchee/Jones Bend Road Area Trunk Sewer in the City of Rome, Floyd County, Georgia. The project was carried out in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (per 36 CFR Part 800, as amended through 2004) by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. The Phase I Survey was conducted along a length of proposed corridor stretching 7.54 km (4.71 miles), part of which lies along the west bank of the Oostanaula River. The proposed right-of-way measures 23 m (75 ft) in width and falls primarily within active agricultural fields or reforested former agricultural fields. Phase II Testing followed at five localities identified either during the survey, or by Berry College, and consisted of extended shovel testing (including areas outside of the corridor) and excavation of 1 by 2 meter (3.3 by 6.6 ft) test units.
