Abstract

On February 5th through 9th, 2007, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological resources survey of the Brannen Crossing Property near Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia. The survey tract consisted of approximately 50 acres situated about 3 km (1.9 miles) east of downtown Statesboro along Veteran's Memorial Parkway. This investigation was carried out for CBL & Associates Properties, Inc. and was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and 36 CFR Part 800, by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61, Appendix A. Background research found one previously recorded archaeological site (9BU48) within the project tract, though no others are located within a 1.6 km (1 mi) radius. Site 9BU48 consisted of a small scatter of late nineteenth and early twentieth century glass and brick. It was recorded by Southeastern Archaeological Services in 1997 as part of the Veteran's Memorial Parkway construction. The site was at that time considered not eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). During this project 113 screened shovel tests were spaced at 30 meter (100 ft) intervals along 17 transects placed throughout the tract according to landforms, wetlands, and disturbance patterns. A visual inspection of all exposed ground surfaces was also conducted. No archaeological resources were identified and all shovel tests were negative. Site 9BU48 appears to have been completely eradicated by the roadway construction and no evidence of its existence was encountered. Cultural resources clearance for the undertaking is recommended.
